Two Solar Powered Raspberry Pi Security IP Cams w/MJPEG Streaming in 1080P

Yesterday I completed a long project to install two Raspberry Pi computers with solar power along our driveway, so we can see our gate. They are verra nice.

I bought two fake security cameras to get the housings, each one contains a 12VDC to 5VDC buck converter, a Raspberry Pi 2 computer and a Raspberry Pi 5MP camera module.

Each camera produces a 1920 by 1080 pixel high definition MJPEG stream. Any Android, iOS, Windows, Mac or Linux client can watch the live datastream in a browser or using VLC.

They just fucking work, after all, they are Debian linux based (Raspbian). No corporate backdoors either.

  1. Hi great hack!
I have a similar project the pi used regular 5volt USB power so I was thinking a smaller 18 watt solar panel with power regulator to charge a 5000 mha USB power pack battery and hook the battery on the pi.

    Would that do the job?

Suggestion used pir motion sensor on camera to get alert when movement detected hook on gpio pin on the pi.

Do you have picture on the other enclosing camera how you put the pi in it the metal one.

    Thx

I’m using a 50 watt panel with 15ah of lead acid battery @12v for one camera. Your plan for 18 watts might be cutting it close.

My latest project is a Power Over Ethernet from inside the house up to our roof for scenic shots of local mountains. The camera is ready, but I’m too prone to injury to go up and mount it, maybe DH will do so next weekend.

For motion detection I’m using Blue Iris PC software. it is truly excellent.
